Frequently Asked Questions About Auto Detailing Products
Ceramic Coatings
What is the difference between SiC and SiO2 ceramic coatings?
SiC (silicon carbide) ceramic coatings are harder and more durable than SiO2 (silicon dioxide) coatings. SiC coatings like our AQUASiC MAX line offer 3 to 10 years of protection with superior scratch resistance and chemical durability. SiO2 coatings and spray sealants are easier to apply and typically last 6 to 22 months, making them ideal for maintenance layers or for those who prefer a simpler application process.
Can I apply a ceramic coating myself or do I need a professional?
All Aqualux ceramic coatings are designed for DIY application. Our spray-on products like Vitrify and Katch 22 require no special tools or experience — just spray, spread, and buff. Our AQUASiC MAX liquid coatings require more careful surface preparation and application technique, but come with detailed instructions that any enthusiast can follow. No certification or professional training is required.
How long does a ceramic coating last?
Durability depends on the product and how well the vehicle is maintained. Our spray ceramic sealants last 6 to 22 months depending on the formula. The AQUASiC MAX liquid ceramic coatings last 3 to 10 years depending on the tier you choose. Regular washing with a pH-neutral soap like our AQUA-SUDS helps maximize longevity.
Do I need to polish my car before applying a ceramic coating?
For best results, yes. Ceramic coatings lock in whatever is underneath them, so any swirl marks, scratches, or oxidation will be sealed under the coating. We recommend using our Aqualux Polish to correct the paint first, then decontaminate the surface before applying the coating. For spray sealants, polishing is optional but recommended for maximum gloss.
Spray Sealants
What is the difference between Katch 22, Dual-Action 2.0, and Unicorn Dust?
Each spray sealant uses a different protective chemistry. Katch 22 is our SiC (silicon carbide) spray sealant with up to 22 months of protection — our most durable spray product. Dual-Action 2.0 is an SiO2 (silicon dioxide) sealant with up to 15 months of protection and excellent water beading. Unicorn Dust is a polymer-based sealant that delivers an ultra-slick feel and intense gloss, ideal for show cars and maintenance coats between stronger sealant applications.
Can I layer spray sealants over a ceramic coating?
Yes. Spray sealants work as excellent maintenance layers over existing ceramic coatings. They add an extra layer of protection, refresh the hydrophobic properties, and boost gloss. We recommend applying a spray sealant every few months to extend the life and performance of your base ceramic coating.
Microfiber Towels & Accessories
What GSM should I look for in a drying towel?
GSM (grams per square meter) measures the density and absorbency of the towel. Higher GSM means more absorbent. Our Slurpy and Slurpy Jr drying towels are 1600 GSM twisted loop microfiber, which is among the highest available. This means they soak up large amounts of water quickly without needing to wring out frequently. For general-purpose towels like interior cleaning or quick detailing, 300-400 GSM is ideal.
How do I wash and maintain my microfiber towels?
Machine wash microfiber towels separately from other laundry using a dedicated microfiber detergent or a small amount of fragrance-free liquid detergent. Wash on warm (not hot) and never use fabric softener or bleach, as these clog the fibers and reduce absorbency. Tumble dry on low heat or air dry. Proper care extends the life of your towels significantly.
Washing & Maintenance
What is a rinseless wash and when should I use one?
A rinseless wash like our AQUA-RINSE 2.0 lets you wash your car without a hose or running water. You mix the solution in a bucket, use a wash mitt to wipe each panel, then dry with a microfiber towel. It is perfect for apartments, garages, water-restricted areas, or when you want a quick wash without the full setup. It is safe for all surfaces including ceramic coatings.
Is AQUA-SUDS soap safe for ceramic coated cars?
Yes. AQUA-SUDS is a pH-neutral car wash soap specifically formulated to be safe for ceramic coatings, spray sealants, and waxes. It will not strip or degrade your protection. The rich foam lifts dirt and contaminants safely away from the surface without scratching.
