SiC vs SiO₂: What the Chemistry Means for Spray Sealants and Coatings
Posted by Aqualux Detail Supply on 28th Oct 2026
SiO₂ is silicon dioxide, better known as silica. It's the standard chemistry behind most products sold as ceramic sprays and sealants. SiC is silicon carbide, a different compound made of silicon and carbon. Neither label on its own tells you which product fits your car. Choose by the job, the surfaces you need covered and how you want to apply it.
At Aqualux Detail Supply, our flagship sprays, VITRIFY MAX and Katch 22, are SiC. AQUA-SLYDE is our SiO₂ spray sealant. Here's what each chemistry is and where every product sits.
What SiO₂ and SiC actually are
Car care labels love chemistry shorthand, so here is what the two terms mean.
SiO₂ (silicon dioxide, silica). Silicon bonded to oxygen. It's the chemistry most of the market means when it says "ceramic." If you've used a ceramic quick spray or a ceramic spray sealant from a big-box shelf, it was most likely SiO₂-based.
SiC (silicon carbide). Silicon bonded to carbon. It's a different chemistry, and it's the one our flagship sprays are built on. When a product says it's SiC-infused or SiC-advanced, the base chemistry is silicon carbide rather than silica.
That's the whole difference at the label level: two different silicon compounds. Everything else that matters to you, like whether you're buying a sealant or a coating, which surfaces it goes on and how much work the application takes, comes from the product, not the chemistry name.
What the label doesn't tell you
"SiC" or "SiO₂" on a bottle answers one question: which chemistry is it built on? It doesn't tell you:
- What type of product it is. A spray sealant, a spray coating and a bottled coating can share the same chemistry and still be very different jobs.
- Where it goes. Some products are for paint only. Others cover glass, trim, chrome or wheels. Some are for trim or glass and must stay off paint.
- How it goes on. Spray, spread and buff is a very different afternoon from a full coating install with decontamination, paint correction, leveling and a cure.
So the useful question isn't "SiC or SiO₂?" It's "What job am I doing, on which surfaces, and how much prep do I want to take on?" Answer that and the chemistry choice usually follows.

The sprays: coating vs sealant
All four of our paint sprays go on with a bottle and a towel. What separates them is the job.
VITRIFY MAX is our SiC-advanced ceramic spray coating and our flagship. It goes on paint, glass, plastic trim and wheels in one spray-and-wipe step, with no multi-hour install, no leveling and no cure window. Expect deep gloss, a slick finish and tight water beading. If you want SiC protection across the whole exterior in one pass, start with VITRIFY MAX.
Katch 22 is our everyday SiC spray sealant for paint. It goes on bare or corrected paint, or over an existing ceramic coating as a topper, and adds gloss, slickness and water beading. It's the spray we reach for most in our studio.
Unicorn Dust is an SiC-infused spray sealant for paint, glass, chrome and plastic trim. It's our pick when you want one sealant for every exterior surface. It's non-chalking on trim and works on its own or over the others.
AQUA-SLYDE, formerly Dual Action 2.0, is our SiO₂ spray sealant. It's safe on all surfaces, inside and outside the vehicle. It adds gloss, slickness and water beading, works on its own or over protection that's already on the car, and ships with a screw cap so you can use your own sprayer.
The bottled coatings: AQUASiC MAX
AQUASiC MAX is a bottled, professional-grade silicon carbide ceramic coating for detailers and experienced enthusiasts. It isn't a spray. It's a full install: decontaminate, correct the paint, apply panel by panel, level, and let it cure before water exposure.
- AQUASiC MAX 3 Year Ceramic Coating is the base AQUASiC MAX coating. It gives up to 3 years of protection with proper prep and maintenance.
- AQUASiC MAX 10 Year Ceramic Coating carries the highest concentration of SiC in the AQUASiC MAX line and is meant for professional installers. It gives up to 10 years of protection with proper prep and maintenance.
Both figures assume a full install on properly prepped paint, a complete cure and regular maintenance washing. Results depend on surface prep, installer leveling technique, climate and maintenance washing. If a full install sounds like more than you want to take on, VITRIFY MAX gives you SiC protection in one spray-and-wipe step.
Trim and glass are their own jobs
Two SiC products aren't for paint at all. Trim Lock is a silicone-free trim coating for exterior plastic, rubber and vinyl that soaks in and dries to the touch. SiC-LARITY is a glass cleaner that leaves a slick, sacrificial SiC layer, so rain beads on exterior glass. Keep both off painted panels.
So which is better, SiC or SiO₂?
Neither, as a blanket rule. They're different chemistries, not a ranking. The right product depends on what you're doing:
- SiC protection on paint, glass, trim and wheels in one step: VITRIFY MAX.
- An everyday spray sealant for paint, or a topper over a coating: Katch 22.
- One spray sealant for paint, glass, chrome and trim: Unicorn Dust.
- The SiO₂ option and an easy entry point: AQUA-SLYDE.
- Grey trim you want dark again: Trim Lock.
- Glass, inside and out: SiC-LARITY.
- A full coating install: AQUASiC MAX 3 Year, or AQUASiC MAX 10 Year for professional installers.
If you're new to all of it, our Start Here page groups the products we run in our bay into one-tap systems.
How every spray goes on
Whichever chemistry you choose, the sprays follow the same routine:
- Start clean and dry. Wash with a pH-neutral soap and dry the car fully.
- Work in the shade. Panels should be cool to the touch.
- Mist and spread. Mist one panel, or your applicator, and spread it thin and even.
- Buff before it dries. Buff with a clean face of a 350 GSM buffing towel, not your drying towel, then move to the next panel.
- Reapply when the beading drops off. How long a spray layer holds depends on your wash routine, weather and prep. Watch how water behaves on the surface.
Questions detailers ask
What is the difference between SiC and SiO₂ in car care? SiO₂ is silicon dioxide (silica), the standard chemistry in most ceramic sprays. SiC is silicon carbide, a different chemistry made of silicon and carbon. VITRIFY MAX and Katch 22 are our SiC sprays. AQUA-SLYDE is our SiO₂ spray sealant.
Is SiC better than SiO₂? They're different chemistries, and the label alone doesn't decide it. Choose by the job: sealant or spray coating, which surfaces, and how you want to apply it.
Is VITRIFY MAX a ceramic coating? VITRIFY MAX is an SiC-advanced ceramic spray coating. You mist a panel, spread it and buff it clear, with no multi-hour install, no leveling and no cure window. For a bottled full-install coating, see AQUASiC MAX.
Can I put a spray sealant over a ceramic coating? Yes. Katch 22, Unicorn Dust and AQUA-SLYDE can all go over an existing coating on a clean, dry surface.
Is AQUA-SLYDE the same as Dual Action 2.0? AQUA-SLYDE replaces Dual Action 2.0 as our SiO₂ spray sealant, on the same product page under a new name.
How long does AQUASiC MAX last? AQUASiC MAX 3 Year gives up to 3 years of protection and AQUASiC MAX 10 Year up to 10 years, both with proper prep, a full cure and regular maintenance washing.
