How to Dilute Tire Shine: A Water-Based Tire Dressing Concentrate Guide
Posted by Aqualux Detail Supply on 29th Oct 2026
Tire Shine is a 16 oz water-based tire dressing concentrate from Aqualux Detail Supply for $19.99. Use it straight for the most shine, or dilute it up to 4:1 (water to product) for a lighter, cleaner look. At 4:1, one bottle makes about 80 oz. It works on tires, interior plastics and exterior trim, and it doesn't sling as long as you don't over-apply it.
Mix it your way
| Mix (water to product) | Look | Where we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Straight | Most shine | Tires you want to stand out |
| Anywhere in between | Middle ground | Exterior plastics and trim |
| 4:1 (4 parts water to 1 part product) | Lighter, clean, natural look | Interior dash and door panels |
There is no single right ratio. Start lighter, check the look, and add more product to the mix until it looks right to you.

How to choose your mix
- Want tires that stand out: run it straight.
- Dressing exterior plastics and trim: go anywhere between straight and 4:1, whatever gives the look you want.
- Doing the dash and door panels: go light, toward 4:1. Clean first with Pure Interior Cleaner.
- Want a coating on exterior trim instead of a dressing: that is a different step, and it is what Trim Lock is for.
How to mix and apply it
- Clean and dry. Clean the surface and let it dry completely. Dressing goes on clean, dry tires and plastics.
- Shake and mix. Shake the bottle well. To dilute, mix anywhere from straight up to 4 parts water to 1 part product in a separate bottle, and shake that too.
- Pour onto a pad. Pour a small amount onto a Foam Applicator, not straight onto the surface.
- Wipe on a thin coat. Wipe a thin, even coat onto the tire sidewall or plastic. Don't over-apply. Wipe off any excess, and anything that lands on paint, glass or tire tread.
- Let it set. Give it time to set before you drive or use the vehicle.
- Cap it. Screw the cap on tightly when you're done.
Always test in an inconspicuous area first.
Dressing or coating?
Tire Shine is a dressing. You wipe it on at the strength you like and refresh it when you want the look back. Trim Lock is a trim coating, a separate step for exterior plastic. Full comparison: Trim Coating vs Trim Dressing.
Questions detailers ask
Will Tire Shine sling? No, as long as you don't over-apply it. Wipe a thin, even coat onto a clean, dry sidewall with a Foam Applicator, wipe off the excess, and let it set before you drive.
Do I have to dilute Tire Shine? No. Use it straight for the most shine, or dilute it up to 4:1 (water to product), or anywhere in between for a lighter look. At 4:1, one 16 oz bottle makes about 80 oz.
Can I use Tire Shine on interior plastics? Yes. It works on interior plastics like the dash and door panels, and a lighter mix gives a clean, natural look. Keep it off the steering wheel, shifter, pedals and floor mats.
Glossy or satin? You choose by the mix. Straight gives the most shine, and more water gives a lighter, cleaner, more natural look.
Can I put Tire Shine on the tread? No. Keep it on the sidewall, and wipe off anything that gets on the tread.
Does it come with a sprayer? No. It comes in a 16 oz bottle with a screw cap. Pour a small amount onto an applicator pad and wipe it on.
