Trim Coating vs Trim Dressing: How to Fix Faded Plastic Trim

Posted by Aqualux Detail Supply on 26th Oct 2026

A trim dressing sits on the surface and darkens plastic for a fresh look. You wipe it on, and you can adjust the shine. A trim coating soaks into clean, dry exterior plastic and dries to the touch with no greasy look. Use a dressing like Tire Shine for quick, adjustable shine on tires and plastics. Use a coating like Trim Lock for faded exterior trim you want dark and dry to the touch.

Grey, chalky trim rolls into our studio every week. Here is how we decide which product it gets, and the exact steps for each.

Why plastic trim looks grey

Most grey trim is a mix of three things: dirt packed into the texture, old dressing that has built up and gone dull, and plain weathering. That is why every step below starts with a proper clean. Product on dirty trim just seals the grey in.

Step 1: Clean the trim properly

Wash with AQUA-SUDS and work the trim with a soft brush or the wash mitt so the texture comes clean. Rinse, then let the trim dry completely. Both products go on clean, dry plastic. Water left in the texture is the most common reason a trim job looks blotchy.

Step 2a: Apply a trim coating

  1. Put a small amount of Trim Lock on a Foam Applicator.
  2. Apply it evenly to the exterior trim. Tape off or stay clear of painted panels.
  3. Let it soak in for about 5 minutes.
  4. Wipe off any remaining excess (high spots) with a clean face of The Swiss 16×16.

Step 2b: Or dress it

  1. Shake Tire Shine and pick your mix, from straight up to 4 parts water to 1 part product. Straight gives the most shine. More water gives a lighter, cleaner look.
  2. Pour a small amount onto a Foam Applicator, not straight onto the trim.
  3. Wipe an even coat on. Wipe off anything that lands on paint or glass.
  4. Let it set before you drive.

Mistakes that leave streaks or high spots

  • Too much product. A thin, even coat looks better than a heavy one. Start small and add.
  • Wet trim. Water in the texture causes blotches. Dry it fully first.
  • Product on paint. Neither one is for paint. Wipe it off right away.
  • Skipping the knock-down. With a coating, high spots left to dry look patchy. Buff them off at the 5-minute mark.

Can I use both?

Yes, on different surfaces. A lot of people run Trim Lock on the faded exterior trim and Tire Shine on the tires and interior plastics. For sealing paint, glass, chrome and trim together after a wash, Unicorn Dust is non-chalking on trim.

Questions we get

Is a trim coating better than a dressing? They do different jobs. A coating soaks in and dries to the touch. A dressing wipes on and you choose the shine.

Can Trim Lock go on paint? No. Exterior plastic, rubber and vinyl only.

Will Trim Lock look greasy or sling? No. It is silicone-free and dries to the touch.

Can I use Tire Shine on plastic trim? Yes. Tire Shine is for tires, interior plastics and exterior plastics and trim.

How long do I let a trim coating sit? About 5 minutes, then knock down any high spots.

How often should I reapply? Trim Lock: when the trim starts to look dry or water stops beading. Tire Shine: whenever you want the look back. We do not put a time figure on either.
