How to Apply a Ceramic Spray Coating: Prep to Buff

Posted by Landon Crawford on 22nd Oct 2026

The question I get most from people who just bought their first ceramic spray coating is "how do I put it on?" The honest answer is that the spray is the easy part. The prep is what decides how it looks. Bonded grit, iron, old wax and swirls all sit under whatever you spray on top, and a coating will lock in whatever paint you give it.

This is the prep and application order I use in the studio, filmed on a real car. You do not need a garage full of equipment, but you do need to go in order.

Jump to: decontamination (4:25), contact wash and bugs (6:57), clay and prep (10:28), polishing (14:10), protection (16:48).

Spray coating vs a traditional coating: why the prep is the same

A traditional bottled coating has to be leveled and left to cure, often in a controlled room. A ceramic spray coating like VITRIFY MAX skips all of that. It is an SiC-advanced spray: spray, spread thin, buff, with no flash time and no cure window. What does not change is the surface underneath. Clean, decontaminated paint takes protection better than dirty paint, no matter how the product goes on.

What you need

Step 1: Pre-treat and decontaminate

Every situation dictates. Do not overthink the moment. If the car is dirty, I start with a stronger pre-wash to cut traffic film. Then the iron decon: spray a fallout remover, fold the mirrors in, and let it dwell about three to five minutes. Do not let it dry on the paint. If it starts to dry, re-mist it. Then flush it off with plenty of water. I like a free-flowing garden hose here because more flow flushes easier.

Pull the door handles and flush behind them too. Grime and chemicals like to sit in there.

Step 2: Contact wash, no more than two passes

Wash with AQUA-SUDS and the mitt, one panel at a time. My rule on the video: no more than two passes over the paint. If a spot needs more than that, it needs a different tool, not more scrubbing. Going over it again and again is where micro-marring comes from.

For bugs, spray BUGZ B GONE, let it dwell 45 to 60 seconds, then wash it off with the mitt. A little goes a long way. Rinse, and do not let any bug remover dry on the paint.

Step 3: Clay

Now the mechanical decon. Lubricate the panel well with your clay lube and clay it left to right, top to bottom, with light pressure. I keep one clay for glass and one for paint. When the clay glides silently, the panel is clean. Rinse again and dry with the SLURPY: lay it flat and drag, do not scrub.

Step 4: Polish if the paint needs it

Look at the paint in direct light or with a flashlight. If you see light swirls and haze, this is the time to fix them, because a coating will make the gloss pop on whatever is underneath, swirls included. Finishing Polish on an Aqua Buff Orange pad on a DA handles light defects. Work small sections, and stop when the paint looks right. You do not need to chase perfection on a daily driver. If you are new to polishing, start in the polishing section of the video. It is easier than people think.

After polishing, wipe the panel down so polish oils are gone before the coating goes on.

Step 5: Apply VITRIFY MAX

Move the car out of the sun. Panels should be cool to the touch.

  1. Spray. Mist one panel, or mist the microsuede applicator. Light coverage. More product is not better.
  2. Spread. Overlapping passes to lay down a thin, even layer. Uneven application is where high spots come from.
  3. Buff. Buff clear right away with a clean face of The Swiss. Flip to a fresh face as soon as one feels loaded.
  4. Move on. Top to bottom, panel by panel. VITRIFY MAX goes on paint, glass, plastic trim and wheels with the same spray-and-wipe step.

Walk the car afterward with a flashlight. If you find a streak, a little more product on a clean towel and a quick buff clears it.

Step 6: Maintain it the easy way

Wash with pH-neutral AQUA-SUDS so harsh soap does not strip what you just put down. Top it with Katch 22 after washes if you want extra slickness. Watch how water behaves on the paint. When the beading drops off, reapply. We do not put a time figure on protection, because results depend on prep, climate, driving and wash habits.

The short version

Pre-wash and iron decon, contact wash with no more than two passes, clay, polish if needed, then spray, spread thin and buff VITRIFY MAX one cool panel at a time. Prep is the job. The spray is the reward.
