First DIY Ceramic Coating: A Beginner's Step-by-Step Guide

Posted by Landon Crawford on 24th Oct 2026

Your first ceramic coating is mostly a prep job. The coating itself takes less time than the wash, decontamination and polish that come before it, and the prep is what decides how it looks when you are done. This guide walks through the full order we use in our studio, step by step, with the amounts we use for each product.

If you are coating in summer heat, read our guide to coating in heat and humidity too.

Spray coating or bottled coating

Decide this first, because it changes how much of this guide you need.

  • Spray coating. VITRIFY MAX is our SiC-advanced ceramic spray coating. Spray, spread thin, buff clear. No flash time, no leveling, no cure window. The best place for most beginners to start. Our spray coating how-to covers it in detail.
  • Bottled coating. AQUASiC MAX Tier 3 and AQUASiC MAX Tier 10 are professional-grade SiC coatings. They are a full install: decontaminate, correct, apply panel by panel, level, and cure before water exposure. They reward a cool, controlled space and some practice.

The prep below is the same for both.

What you need

Step 1: Wash

Rinse the car first. Pre-treat bug-heavy areas with BUGZ B GONE mixed 10:1, water to product. Let it dwell 45 to 60 seconds on a cool surface, never let it dry, then rinse. Wash with AQUA-SUDS at 1 to 2 oz in a 3 to 4 gallon bucket, or 1 oz in a foam cannon. Work top to bottom, one panel at a time, and rinse the mitt between panels.

Step 2: Decontaminate

A wash removes dirt. Decontamination removes what is bonded to the paint. Spray an iron remover, let it dwell a few minutes without drying, and rinse well. Then clay: mix AQUA-RINSE 2.0 at 1:16 as a lubricant, keep the panel wet, and glide the clay with light pressure until it moves silently. Rinse and dry with the SLURPY. Lay it flat and drag it, do not scrub.

Step 3: Polish if the paint needs it

Look at the paint under a bright light or a flashlight. If you see light swirls or haze, take them out now, because a coating will make whatever is underneath look glossier, defects included. On a dual-action polisher with the Aqua Buff Orange pad, prime with 4 to 5 drops of Finishing Polish and work 2 by 2 ft sections with slow, overlapping passes. Wipe the residue with a clean Swiss towel and inspect. If the paint already looks good, skip this step.

Step 4: Prep wipe

Polish leaves oils behind, and coatings bond best to bare, clean paint. Mist a panel prep spray onto a clean towel and wipe every panel you plan to coat, then follow with a dry towel. Work in the shade on cool panels. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons first coatings look streaky.

Step 5: Apply

Spray coating: mist VITRIFY MAX onto one panel or onto the Microsuede Applicator, spread a thin, even layer and move straight to the buff.

Bottled coating: put a few drops of coating on the Microsuede Applicator and spread it over a small section, about half a hood or one door, in straight overlapping passes, side to side and then up and down. Reload lightly as you go. A thin, even layer is the goal.

Step 6: Level

Spray coating: buff clear with a clean face of The Swiss. That is it.

Bottled coating: watch the section at an angle. When the film starts to sweat or show a faint rainbow, it is ready. Wipe with one Swiss towel using light pressure to take off most of the residue, then follow right behind with a second clean towel to buff it clear. Check the section from two or three angles with a bright light before you move on. Change towel faces often.

Step 7: Cure

Follow the cure directions on your bottle. As a general rule, keep the car dry and out of rain, sprinklers and dew for at least the first day, and wait about a week before a soap wash. When you wash, use AQUA-SUDS so a harsh soap does not work against your new protection.

How much coating does each vehicle need

These are rough ranges for one layer on painted surfaces with a bottled coating. Actual use depends on paint condition, how heavily you load the applicator and how many layers you apply. Always follow the directions on your bottle.

Vehicle sizeBottled coating, one layer, paint only (estimate)
Coupe or small carAbout 15 to 20 ml
Midsize sedanAbout 20 to 30 ml
Small SUV or crossoverAbout 25 to 35 ml
Full-size truck or large SUVAbout 35 to 50 ml

For the products you use along the way, these are the amounts from our product pages:

ProductHow much
AQUA-SUDS1 to 2 oz per 3 to 4 gallon bucket, or 1 oz in a foam cannon
BUGZ B GONEMix 10:1, water to product. Dwell 45 to 60 seconds
AQUA-RINSE 2.01:16 as a clay lube or quick detailer
Finishing Polish4 to 5 drops per 2 by 2 ft section
Microsuede Applicator (Grey)One per install keeps the coating from loading up old residue
The Swiss 16×16 10-PackPlan on a fresh face for every section and a fresh towel when one feels loaded

Common first-timer mistakes

  • Coating a warm panel, or working in the sun.
  • Using too much product. More coating is not more protection. It is more leveling.
  • Skipping the prep wipe after polishing.
  • Leveling with a loaded towel.
  • Washing with soap too soon.

Questions we get

How much ceramic coating do I need for my car?

It depends on the size of the vehicle, the condition of the paint and how heavily you load the applicator. As a rough guide for one layer on paint: about 15 to 20 ml for a small car or coupe, 20 to 30 ml for a midsize sedan, 25 to 35 ml for a small SUV, and 35 to 50 ml for a full-size truck or large SUV. Treat these as estimates and follow your bottle.

Do I have to polish before a ceramic coating?

Only if the paint has swirls or haze you want gone. A coating makes the paint underneath look glossier, defects included. If the paint already looks good after washing and decontamination, you can skip straight to the prep wipe.

What is a prep wipe and why does it matter?

It is a final wipe with a panel prep spray, usually alcohol based, that removes polish oils and leftover residue so the coating can bond to bare paint. Coating over polish oils is a common reason first installs look streaky.

What do I apply a ceramic coating with?

A lint-free microsuede applicator, such as our grey Microsuede Applicator, to spread a thin, even layer, and short-pile buffing towels like The Swiss 16×16 to level it. Keep your drying towel for drying only.

Should a beginner start with a spray coating or a bottled coating?

If you are new, a spray coating like VITRIFY MAX is the easiest start because there is no flash time, leveling or cure window. A bottled coating like AQUASiC MAX is a full install that rewards good prep, a controlled space and some practice.

How soon can I wash my car after a ceramic coating?

Follow the cure directions on your bottle. As a general rule, keep it dry for the first day and wait about a week before a soap wash, then use a pH-neutral soap like AQUA-SUDS.

Results depend on surface prep, technique, climate and wash habits. We do not put a time figure on any coating. Try any product on a small, hidden area first and follow its label.
